INTRO:
While taking this class, an opportunity came along.
There was an email on the Health Ed listserve, looking for a Health Educator to develop and maintain a Collaborative Website dedicated to Health Education.
I really was intrigued, and also hoping this would qualify as a Capstone Project as I am nearing the end of my M.Ed. program.
I was selected and I have been VERY busy getting into it. There are some limitations, and I am learning what the needs are. It is very time consuming although what I have gotten done hardly seems worthy of the time put in!!!!
Anyway, it has taken me away from this project a bit.
Naturally, if I could somehow combine my work on this project, with the class project....all the better.

THE IDEA:
I added a page to this website I was working on, to include youtube.com videos because they are so readily available and taking over from the traditional classroom video purchases which are often expensive, too long, and quickly outdated.
I posted a video and a possible way to use it in the classroom.
A teacher in an even more rural areas than I work in, asked if I could help her make this into a lesson to introduce Health Literacy Skills.

I had a lesson that I used to introduce the topic. It also demonstrated the principal of skills progression through our content areas, BUT the product has been a mobile, a poster, and basically in dire need of an upgrade. There were a variety of tools that could be used, my collaborator was interested in learning and introducing Prezi to her students and so that is what we used.

THE UPDATED LESSON:
Here is our product, our three day lesson.

The lesson has also been published on the Heath Teachers Collaborative Ring Shared Lessons Page

Now I have to figure out what more I need to do. Ideas?

UNSURE OF THE AUDIO/VISUAL COMPONENT BUT....

listen-2.png

I have put my audio onto my blog that I started with my previous class, it's the January 2013 post titles, Making Multimedia Meaningful. I used audioboo and then recalled why I don't use it much. I have a terrible time embedding the audio player, just won't, I have to copy/paste/link the web address instead. Is it a mac thing???

WRITTEN REFLECTION

Which of the NETS standards are demonstrated through this project, and to what level? This is addressed on my audio.
How would you expect this project to improve the proficiency (NETS)of your students (staff, co-workers)?I believe that any work we do with students improves our students digital proficiency as long as:
  • we make the work and product about higher order thinking
  • we reinforce responsible digital citizenship at every point
  • the focus is content

For staff, this has been a revelation for me. i honestly had not even considered the NETS for teachers, hadn't seen them, hadn't ever had them presented to me. Of course it makes sense, and I am excited. I have looked through them, have begun assessing my work to see where I fit. I have shared them with my colleagues, most of whom had not seen them either.

What is the rationale for supporting a media literate classroom environment? We must support this. The rationale is that we want to prepare our students to be successful and technology is integral to that mission. I can't fathom any alternative to this rationale. The problem is getting the staff either more experienced, or at least more comfortable with new tools.
How does the use of digital multimedia enhance communication? The creation of multi-media projects shows such more depth of understanding application of knowledge. Students are unlocked, and can show what they learned. This makes learning and assessment so much more accessible to students. We have to prepare them for the expectations of their future and multi-media opens communication avenues....video and photo essays bridge language barriers. Bringing music, text, videos, and all other media together makes a more complex picture, reaches to understand on different levels, and shows creativity in how they can bring it together.
How does the use of digital multimedia resources inspire and engage all learners?Well, we have spent enough time learning about learners...the learning styles, the thinking styles, and the differentiated instruction models. Technology just is that. Students WANT to work on the topic, they WANT to find new ways to SHOW what they know...The information is the starting point, the problem to be solved, or the product to be created is the finish line, and the technology is the main event the puts it all together, makes you excited, twist and turns until you get it right.

MY FINAL ESSAY

final-countdown.jpg

My essay is the latest entry into my blog. It is the February 2013 post called "Are we holding on too tight? or for dear life?"I attempted to delve into the topic of how technology is changing some of the pillars of American public schools...I chose to look at cursive writing, spelling, and using calculators for math and how polarized educators are about these topics.
